Q: What type of coverage do you offer?
A: We currently write homeowners insurance on single family homes and duplexes which are occupied by the owner as a primary, secondary or seasonal residence.
Q: What determines if a risk is secondary or seasonal?
A: A seasonal home is one in which you are away for a minimum of 3 consecutive months during any 12 month period. To be eligible for our coverage, you would need to spend a minimum of 4 months in the home at some time during the year. A secondary residence is one that is frequently visited but not maintained as a primary residence. Neither a seasonal nor a secondary residence can be rented to others at any time to be eligible for our coverage.
Q: Do you insure homes that are under construction?
A: We can insure homes that are in the course of construction only if the home is within 30 days of being completed and occupied by the owner of the home. We will also allow for minor renovations in which the property owner continues to live in the residence.
Q: What is your company rating?
A: Our company has been given an A rating from Demotech. Demotech is a financial stability ratings company that is accepted by financial organizations such as banks and mortgage companies.
Q: Do you run a credit check on applicants?
A: At this time, we do not run credit.
Q: How long have you been in business?
A: We received our Certificate of Authority to do business as an admitted carrier in Florida on March 6, 2008.
Q: What do I do if I have a claim?
A: In the event that you have a loss you should immediately contact our claims department at 1-888-511-7716 and give us the details of your situation.
Q: How do I make changes to my policy?
A: You may call and speak to a customer service representative Mon. – Fri. between 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. Eastern Time by calling 888-524-6003. Changes can also be made by written request and submitted via mail or fax to our customer service department.
Q: Is my personal data secure? What security measures do you have in place?
A: We use only secure communication lines to encrypt your data, and we are very careful with your personal information; using approved technology to keep your information secure. And rest assured, we do not share your information with anyone. You will receive a copy of our privacy policy when you become a customer. If you would like to review our privacy policy now, please click here.
Q: Are you adequately reinsured? What are your reinsurance carriers rated?
A: We use only A-rated reinsurance carriers in addition to reinsurance issued by the Florida Hurricane Catastrophe Fund. We carry a large amount of reinsurance, which will ensure we maintain our financial strength in the event of a catastrophe.
Q: Do you offer credit for alarms?
A: Credits are available for burglar and/or fire alarms which are monitored by a central station. You must provide an alarm certificate from the monitoring company to receive credit.
Q: Do you cover pets?
A: There is no animal liability coverage or coverage for any damage caused by animals, domestic or otherwise.
Q: Can I remove windstorm coverage from my policy?
A: Yes, however it is important to remember that you will become financially responsible for all damages to your property caused by a windstorm. For example, if a hurricane causes $50,000 in damage to your home and you do not have windstorm coverage on your insurance policy then you are completely responsible to pay that $50,000 to repair your home. If you have a mortgage, they will most likely require you to have windstorm insurance on your home . Although you have this option, we strongly advise you to carefully consider the consequences before electing it.
Q: Why do I have two deductibles on my policy?
A: You will see two deductible amounts on your declarations page of the policy, the All Other Peril (AOP) deductible and the Hurricane Deductible. The Hurricane Deductible will only apply in the event that you have property damage from a named hurricane. The AOP deductible applies to all other losses.
Q: How do I know your company is licensed and approved by the state to cover my property?
A: People's Trust Insurance Company is an admitted carrier approved by the Office of Insurance Regulation (OIR) and protected by Florida Insurance Guarantee Association (FIGA). We have A-rated reinsurance carriers backing us and are approved by the financial industry to back mortgage loans. You may investigate our licensing for yourself at www.fldfs.com
Q: Do you cover business personal property?
A: There is no coverage for any personal property that is used for business purposes.
Q. Can I insure my high value personal property?
A: We offer an endorsement to schedule certain types of valuable personal property at their specific value which is determined by the purchase receipt or appraisal. If you have property that you wish to insure at a specific value please call to speak with a customer service representative Mon. – Fri. between 9 a.m .– 5 p.m. Eastern Time by calling 888-524-6003.
Q: What is the personal property replacement cost endorsement?
A: The standard homeowners policy includes coverage for your personal property at actual cash value which factors in depreciation at the time of loss. If you select the replacement cost coverage endorsement, for an additional premium, we will settle losses to your personal property without considering depreciation.
Q: How do I determine how much coverage I need on my home?
A: The amount of coverage on your home should be equal to the amount it would cost to rebuild your home in the event of a total loss. This amount is not the same as the market value of your home. We can help you determine the right amount of coverage you need to be sure you are properly covered.
Q: Can my mortgage company require me to insure to the value of my mortgage?
A: The highest amount of coverage the mortgage company can require you to carry is the amount that is required to rebuild your home in the event of a total loss.
Q: Does your policy include flood coverage?
A: Our homeowners policy does not include flood coverage; however, we can provide you with access to a policy from the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) for limits up to $250,000 on dwellings and $100,000 on contents.
Q: Will you inspect my home?
A: When you receive a quote from People’s Trust you will be advised if an inspection will be needed.
Q: Are my contents in offsite storage covered?
A: No.
Q: Do I need sinkhole coverage?
A: This is an optional coverage for you to consider including in your policy. It is mandatory for all carriers doing business in Florida to offer sinkhole coverage to all insured parties. Florida and especially certain counties within Florida have a high incidence of sinkhole activity. The greater the sinkhole activity in a county, the higher the sinkhole coverage costs. If you elect not to purchase this coverage, we will need to get a waiver signed by you for our records.
